Quitting smoking

If you are a smoke-free youth, you’ve made an excellent choice for your health, along with many other young people in Newfoundland and Labrador!

If you smoke or use other forms of tobacco, quitting is one of the best things you can do for your health (and your wallet!)  You may need support to quit – a trusted adult or friends who care can support you.

When you decide to quit, ask for help. Talk to a trusted adult, nurse, doctor, pharmacist or other health-care provider, or call the Newfoundland and Labrador Smokers’ Helpline at 1-800-363-5864. You can also visit the NL Smoker’s Helpline website where you can check out their online and text support programs.

Staying smoke-free

It is easy to become addicted to the nicotine that is in tobacco, so it is best not to smoke at all. For people that do smoke, most started smoking once in a while and gradually increased over time. You may think it is okay to have a few cigarettes a day or week, but any amount of smoking can have a negative effect on your health and well-being and may set you on a path of lifelong addiction.

To stay smoke-free, it helps to hang out with people who do not smoke. If your friends smoke, you are more likely to smoke. If you have friends who smoke, encourage them to quit.
