Physical activity is an important part of a healthy pregnancy with many benefits to both the mother and the developing fetus. The 2019 Canadian Guideline for Physical Activity Throughout Pregnancy outlines the right amount of physical activity women should get throughout pregnancy to promote maternal, fetal, and neonatal health.
All pregnant women should be physically active during their pregnancy, unless there is a contraindication (medical reason) that makes it unsafe to do. A full list of contraindications to exercise during pregnancy can be found at CSEP (The Gold Standard of Exercise Science and Personal Training) .
It is recommended that pregnant women get at least 2.5 hours (150 minutes) of physical activity at least three days a week to reduce pregnancy complications and increase health benefits, however, being active every day is encouraged!
