Eating for Less
Many people are finding the cost of food to be challenging. However, with meal planning, grocery shopping and cooking at home, eating for less can be possible.
Here are some tips to help you eat for less:
- Look for sales
- Check flyers, mobile apps and websites before you shop to see what is on sale.
- Use coupons to save on items you need to buy.
- Plan ahead
- Use Canada’s Food Guide to plan meals and snacks. You can choose more economical options like frozen and canned vegetables and fruits and plant-based proteins like beans and lentils.
- Include food you already have on hand and those that are on sale.
- Make a list
- Make a list of food you need to buy for the meals and snacks you have planned.
- Keep an ongoing grocery list on the fridge to write down items when you run out.
- Stick to your list
- Buy only food you really need or will use.
- Try not to shop when you are hungry to avoid impulse purchases.

There may be food programs in your community to help you save money, such as:
- Bulk buying clubs
- Community gardens
- Community freezers
- Community kitchens

Schools
Most schools in Newfoundland and Labrador offer breakfast programs to ensure that all children have access to food at school, at no cost to families. The School Lunch Association offers a lunch program in some schools that provides a hot, nutritious lunch for school children, regardless of a family’s financial situation. Check with your child’s school to see if these programs are available to your family.
